Setfos (Semiconducting Thin Film Optical Simulation software) by FLUXiM AG
Setfos is a powerful simulation package designed for researchers working on optical multilayers, optoelectronics and solar renewable energy. It is composed of three modules: emission, drift-diffusion and absorption. The emission module is aimed at the design of emissive multilayer structures as OLEDs, LEDs, and VCSELs. The drif-diffusion module is designed to simulate charge transport in organic semiconductor devices (e.g. OLEDs and OPVs). Finally, the absorption module is aimed at the design of solar cells and optical coatings.
Modules may be combined. For example, the drift-diffusion calculation may be performed first for an OLED to calculate its exciton profile under electrical bias. The exciton profile can then be used to calculate the optical emission by the emission module to obtain a complete set of electro-optical characteristics for the OLED. Similarly, the absorption and drift-diffusion modules may be combined to simulate the electrical output of a solar cell under illumination.

Features and Capabilities
Graphical User Interface (all modules) features an intuitive tool for specifying the multilayers in the target device structure. The refractive index of each layer can be either constant or wavelength dependent. The latter is stored in an ascii file for easy referencing. Spectrum/spectra of the emissive layer(s) are all user definable and stored in ascii file(s).
Script Editor (all modules) provides more experienced users a fast and convenient way to define all elements of a simulation. The User Manual contains the full syntax of the easy-to-use Setfos input language. Script files may be edited with any text editor. The graphical user interface also generates script files that are a complete record of the simulation conditions.
Passive Optics (all modules) calculates transmittance, reflectance and absorption wth the multilayer defined but none of the three modules turned on. It is useful in designing multilayer optical thin films such as anti-reflection coatings.
Emission Module is well suited for the design and optimization of OLEDs. Key features include:
- User defined exciton distribution, with arbitrary dipole orientation and consideration of exciton decay dynamics
- Multiple emissive layers and emissive species
- Coherent thin film optics with the option of defining an incoherent substrate
- Both top and bottom (or both) emission
- Calculates emission spectra, far-field intensity profile, CIE, and CRI
- Calculates all modes including substrate wave-guided modes, ITO/organic lossy modes, and power dissipated into metal electrodes – all calculated by the Chance theory. This is the most accurate method for calculating the outcoupling efficiency and estimating improvements from various outcoupling enhancement schemes.
Drift-Diffusion Module simulates device electrical characteristics, accounting for bipolar charge injection and transport, field dependent mobilities, Langevin recombination, and exciton diffusion and transfer prior to radiative decay. Customizable features include:
- Ohmic or thermionic charge injection
- Unipolar or bipolar recombination
- Field and/or temperature dependent, or extended Gaussian disorder model (EGDM) mobilities
- Standard or detailed (user-defined energy, density and release rate) trap distribution
Absorption Module calculates the optical field penetration profile into the absorptive device using a modified transfer matrix formalism. Its main features are
- Arbitrary configuration of coherent and incoherent layers
- Spectral penetration of external illumination
- User-defined illumination spectrum
- Photon rate absorption profile
- Layer specific absorption
Optimization (available in all modules) allows for a set of parameter variations that shall optimize a user-defined target quantity. Most commonly, the target quantity is a scalar such as the intensity in the normal direction, the total light output or the CRI. But the target can also be a spectrum where the software finds the solution that minimizes spectral error.
